Be Flood Aware

The Nehalem River and its larger tributaries have flooded many times and will flood again. Being aware of flood hazards and reminding family, friends and your new neighbor of the risk of flooding in the Upper Nehalem Valley is the first step in preparing the community.

Use the Upper Nehalem Flood Map to view flood hazard areas.

Don't live in a flood zone? You will still be impacted by flood events. During and after a flood you should expect power loss, inability of the City to produce water if you live in Vernonia, and disruption to transportation from washed out roads and bridges.

Be Warned

There are several ways to be notified of potential flood events.

  • Make sure wireless emergency alerts are enabled on your mobile phone.
  • Sign up for Columbia 911's Columbia Alert Network to receive flood warnings and other public safety and emergency notifications.
  • Install the FEMA App on your mobile device to get alerts and notifications for several locations.
  • Join the Upper Nehalem Flood Facebook page or follow us on Twitter.

Be Ready

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has created through its Ready.gov program information and resources to prepare for flooding, as well as many other disasters and emergencies.

  • Be prepared for and what to do during a flood.
  • Step by step guide to making a plan, including downloadable preparedness materials.
  • Don't forget to make a plan for your pets too.
  • Preparedness resources for kid and teens.
  • Preparedness planning for your business.
